A Fort Myers couple is raising awareness about the potential for contractors and handymen to take advantage of seniors.
Olinda and Brian Spitzer shared their story with WINK Investigates in Collier County at our WINK Listens, hoping to protect fellow seniors from similar situations.
The Spitzers hired a cabinet maker for a custom project, but after numerous false promises and missed deadlines, they discovered the work had not even begun.
“It appears to be kind of a senior quality. If somebody comes in well dressed, and they talk really well and they say they’re, they pick up on, you know, what your background is, and things like that, and we tend, we tend to be more trusting, I think, as seniors, than we were when we were a bit younger,” said Brian Spitzer.
“Be sure you do your research,” Olinda Spitzer added.
The couple took their case to small claims court and won a $6,000 judgment, but they have yet to receive any payment. They said the company they hired changed names and closed accounts, which added to their frustration.
Despite their legal victory, the Spitzers decided not to proceed with their home renovation after facing several legal and consumer protection obstacles.
For those considering hiring a contractor or handyman, it’s important to verify their licensing with the state if required. Check for any lawsuits filed against them with the county clerk’s office and seek references to inspect their previous work.
Readers can learn more about protecting themselves from contractor fraud by visiting the county clerk’s office or checking state licensing requirements.
